Fillings And Bondings

Tooth Filling in Ballantyne

dental filling or bonding is when dental restorative material is used to restore the function, integrity, and anatomy of missing tooth structure. The tooth structural loss typically results from decay or trauma.

Dr. Patel also is an expert in using multi-layered fillings with different colors to mimic the colors of a natural tooth. Look as these “Before” and “After” photos of our actual patients below.  Multi-layering techniques and artistic touch were used to match the adjacent teeth.

Disadvantages Of Amalgam (Silver) Fillings:

We use tooth-colored fillings at our office because amalgam fillings have many drawbacks. Beside their unaesthetic look, the edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak or break. This results in the tooth not being protected and lets cavities get started once again. With age, the metal of a amalgam filling expands, contracts, and can split the tooth!

It is very important to understand that these problems most of the time do not cause you any pain or sensitivity. If you are experiencing those symptoms, it may be too late to save the tooth or a root canal and crown may be required. Therefore it is important to treat these issues before your teeth become sensitive.

Amalgam or silver-colored fillings sometimes contain up to 50% mercury. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth and gums. It is not uncommon that these old fillings have a lot of decay and stain underneath. Dr. Patel will always check your old fillings and let you know if any of them require replacement.

Here is another example from our patient where we safely and thoroughly removed the amalgam fillings and restored them with multi-colored white fillings.
