What is Sedation Dentistry?
Dental phobia is a real, often overwhelming reality for thousands of people. Negative previous dental experiences, fear of needles or drills, and severe gag reflexes are just some of the reasons people feel extreme anxiety when thinking about visiting the dentist. This leads to problems in your teeth and gums, often making a simple treatment much more complex. Most dental problems can be fixed easily and quickly if caught early on, otherwise more extensive and expensive treatments may be required.
We offer all levels of sedation and anesthesia in our office. Dr. Dolgov (minimal and moderate conscious sedation), as well as a dental anesthesiologist (for deep or IV sedation) are able to provide you with the same level care and safety as you would receive in a hospital at a fraction of a cost of hospital stay.
Why choose Premier Dentistry?
Our office offers our patients both conscious (oral) sedation and IV sedation. The needle-free Oral sedation helps you to be comfortable and calm when undergoing dental procedures. As a matter of fact, most patients would not remember anything afterwards and fall asleep during sedation. If you choose the option of oral sedation your sedation/anesthesia is administered and monitored by Dr. Dolgov, who is trained in this field and is approved by the NC Dental Board for the Administration of Moderate Conscious Sedation.
IV Sedation Dentistry
With intravenous or IV sedation dentristry, you will be in a much deeper level of sedation within minutes and simply wake up when everything is completed.
Most dentists are only qualified to administer laughing gas (Nitrous Oxide) plus a very mild anti-anxiety medication like Valium. Dr. Dolgov and our dental anesthesiologist are trained and hold permits to administer sedation to their patients. Dental experience, continuous training, strict rules, and monitoring devices are required to obtain this permit and to administer this type of sedation dentistry. This allows Dr. Dolgov to gauge your comfort level and keep you at a level that you are most relaxed during the appointment.
Oral Sedation Dentistry (Non-IV)
One of the best things about oral or non-IV sedation is there are no needles involved. Upon your arrival you are vitals and medical history is reviewed then you are given a mixture of medications under the direct supervision of Dr. Dolgov and trained staff. Within minutes after the medication is administered, you will feel relaxed and comfortable any many just fall asleep.
With oral sedation, a constant level is maintained so you are relaxed and comfortable at all times. At any time an antidote can be administered to reverse the effects of the medications if necessary. Oral sedation is very safe because you continue to breathe and function on your own. All sedation medications are administered and monitored by Dr. Dolgov in the safety and comfort of our office environment.
Conscious Sedation Dentistry & What To Expect
First, we schedule a thorough consult and examination before proceeding with more serious treatment. This way you get to meet the doctor and staff without actually receiving any dental treatment in a calm atmosphere. At this visit you discuss treatments with Dr. Dolgov and our Patient/Insurance Coordinators will help you with your financial questions. Once we answer all your questions and address your concerns, we will schedule an appointment to receive your treatment or part of your treatment under sedation.
During your sedation visit, Dr. Dolgov and clinical staff will be in the room with you at all times, from the minute we administer the sedation medication to the time you wake up and afterward in recovery. Dr. Dolgov, as well as one or two members of our trained clinical staff, will monitor you to make sure you are comfortable and safe at all times.
Even the most hesitant patients, after receiving their treatment under sedation, tell us that they wish they knew about sedation dentistry sooner. So what are you waiting for?
